The Fireproof Mantle is a secret item in the first chapter of Black Myth: Wukong, and getting it before facing off against Black Bear Guai should be one of your top priorities.

The Fireproof Mantle is a Vessel that you can equip and use to resist all fire damage for a limited time. There are plenty of different times when having it comes in handy, but the Mantle is especially useful for the second phase of the Black Bear Guai boss fight at the end of Chapter 1.

The first thing you need to do to unlock the path to the Fireproof Mantle is ring three bells and find the Ancient Guanyin Temple. By following the main story, you’re all but guaranteed to find the bells, but somehow that didn’t stop me from completely missing the Ancient Guanyin Temple when I played. Luckily, you’re going to learn from my mistake and save yourself a good deal of backtracking in the process.

How to find the Fireproof Mantle

To find the Fireproof Mantle, you’ll first need to defeat Guangzhi near the Outside the Forest Shrine. Then, you’ll head to the Snake Trail shrine to find the Guangmou boss fight. After ringing that bell, you’re off to the Marsh of the White Mist shrine, where you’ll get to fight White Clad Noble.

Here’s where I made a very simple mistake that ended up costing me about an hour in backtracking to see if I’d missed any bells. Once you ring the bell in White Clad Noble’s boss arena, don’t continue on to the next area. You actually need to go back through the arena’s main entrance, and from there, you should spot a newly revealed path on your right. Follow the path to get transported to Ancient Guanyin Temple, where another boss and the Fireproof Mantle await you.

How to beat Elder Jinchi

Before you can get your hands on the Fireproof Mantle, you’ll need to beat Elder Jinchi. His fight is very similar to the Wandering Wight, though he has some monk NPCs who will attack you throughout the fight and a special move that allows him to heal. Like the Wandering Wight, Elder Jinchi is fairly easy to knock down, so use a mix of magic, transformations, and combos to continually break his stance. Then, when Elder Jinchi floats into the air, start attacking his worshipers before they reach him to deny him as much health regeneration as you can.

Aside from that big healing maneuver, Elder Jinchi doesn’t really have any tricks up his sleeve. Avoiding the monks can be a bit of a pain, but they don’t do enough damage to demand that you focus on them instead of the boss himself. Once Elder Jinchi is dead, you’ll get the Fireproof Mantle and be fully prepared for the Black Bear Guai battle.
